Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. Latifahs parents split up at the age of Latifah, then ten years aged, was 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was 8. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's first group, which included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. The track caught the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
